Here is a link to Vodo, a site that (when functional) will offer filmmakers access to donations (apparently, unlike the ASCAP and BMI model where authors receive payments from a centralized rights management organization, each film that originates on Vodo will have a link that allows donations to be sent from the consumer directly to the filmmaker).
